High-calorie diets in ALS
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disorder affecting the nerve cells that control muscle movement. A phase 2 study published in The Lancet assesses the safety and tolerability of two hypercaloric diets in patients with ALS. Researchers randomly allocated 24 people with ALS who were already using gastrostomy feeding to an isocaloric diet, a high-carbohydrate diet, or a high-fat diet. The findings support the use of hypercaloric nutritional interventions as a new, low-risk therapy for the treatment of ALS.
