Look Out, Killer Chemicals—California Has A Bullseye On Your Back

New law will start forcing manufacturers to get carcinogens and dangerous chemicals out of your home products.

Every day, you interact with the chemicals used to wash your clothes, shampoo your hair, or clean your home—and maybe you pay a little extra or shop at specialty stores to avoid chemical-laden products that have unpronounceable ingredients.

But many people can't afford the luxury of shopping strictly green—which means they also don't have the peace of mind that everyday products are safe for their families.

California lawmakers have just made that luxury a reality for the state by implementing the Safer Consumer Products Law to regulate toxins in household products, changing the traditional chemical policy focus from finding safe exposure levels to replacing them altogether.

The law makes California the first state in the country to require manufacturers to substitute safe substances for dangerous ones if they want to sell their wares in the nation’s largest consumer market.

“The fact that California has this law is pushing the entire market to a new paradigm shift,” said Renee Sharp, director of research for the Environmental Working Group, an environmental health research and advocacy group. “Companies should not be putting dangerous chemicals in products.”
