Italian study brings transmitter substances into focus
A new Italian study showing a high prevalence of cytokines, some of the body's transmitter substances, in individuals with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) has led to immunological studies at the Danish Research Centre.

A new Italian study (De Luca, 2010) has found a high prevalence of cytokines, specific body transmitter substances, in individuals with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). These include interferon (IFN)-gamma, which is known to play a role in the development of contact allergy.

The Italian study comprised 226 people with MCS, all diagnosed on the basis of Cullen's criteria and a modified version of the American questionnaire QEESI, and a healthy control group for comparison.

The Research Centre plans immunological study
As the Italian findings are the first of their kind, it is necessary to verify the results in other studies before drawing a conclusion on immunological factors in MCS.

The Danish Research Centre for Chemical Sensitivities therefore plans to study levels of transmitter substances in patients with MCS, independent of contact allergy.

The study is planned to start in the beginning of 2011.

No signs of consistency with selected genes
The Italian research group also explored a number of genes affecting the turnover of foreign substances in the body and found no evidence that these genes play an important role in MCS.



These findings are similar to those of a study from the Danish Research Centre (Berg et al, 2010).
