Synopsis by Lindsey Konkel

Insecticides commonly used in households may be associated with kids' behavior problems, according to a new study by researchers in Quebec. The study is one of the first to investigate potential human health effects of pyrethroids, which are used in more than 3,500 commercial products, including flea bombs and roach sprays.

Insecticides commonly used in households may be associated with behavior problems in children, according to a new study by researchers in Quebec.

The study is one of the first to investigate potential human health effects of pyrethroids, which are used in more than 3,500 commercial products, including flea bombs and roach sprays.

The findings raise some questions about the safety of the compounds, which have replaced other insecticides with known risks to children’s brain development. Exposure to pyrethroids, which kill insects by interfering with their nervous systems, is widespread because they are used inside homes and schools, in municipal mosquito control and on farms.

In the study, the urine of 779 Canadian children between the ages of 6 and 11 was tested, and their parents answered questions about each child’s behavior. ...

Abstract

Thousands of tons of neonicotinoids are widely used in the world as broad-spectrum systemic insecticides and veterinary drugs. It was originally thought that neonicotinoids exhibited low mammalian toxicity. However, following their widespread use, it became increasing evident that neonicotinoids could have various toxic effects on vertebrates and invertebrates. The focus of this article is primarily to summarize the research progress associated with oxidative stress as a plausible mechanism for neonicotinoid-induced toxicity as well as neonicotinoid metabolism. This review summarizes the research conducted over the past decade into the production of ROS, RNS and oxidative stress as results of neonicotinoid treatments, and ultimately their correlation with the toxicity and metabolism of neonicotinoids. The metabolism of neonicotinoids and protection of various compounds against neonicotinoid-induced toxicity based on their anti-oxidative effects is also discussed. This review will throw new light on the critical roles of oxidative stress in neonicotinoid-induced toxicity to non-target species.

Brain and Behavioral Effects of Early Exposures to Neurotoxicants

(Visit: http:/www.uctv.tv/) This presentation addresses the impact of prenatal exposure to a common neurotoxicant on brain structure and neuropsychological function in an inner-city cohort of minority children. The toxic chemical, an organophosphate insecticide (chlorpyrifos), has been banned for indoor residential use in the U.S. since 2001, but continues to have widespread application for agricultural purposes.
Possible moncholinergic mechanisms involve disruption of neural cell development and neurotransmitter systems, including the formation and activity of synapses in different brain regions. This presentation examines the evidence for long-term effects of prenatal chlorpyrifos exposure on neuropsychological profiles and brain morphology

Little Things Matter: The Impact of Toxins on the Developing Brain
Kleine Dinge Materie: Die Auswirkungen von Toxinen auf die Entwicklung Gehirn

Canadian Environmental Health Atlas

Veröffentlicht am 11.11.2014

We’ve been studying the impact of toxins on children for the past 30 years and reached the inescapable conclusion: little things matter. We’ve discovered that extremely low levels of toxins can impact brain development. We have also discovered that subtle shifts in the intellectual abilities of individual children have a big impact on the number of children in a population that are challenged or gifted. Steps should be taken to reduce children's exposure to toxins or suspected toxins. You can read more about how toxins impact brain development and the supportive documentation for this video here:

Abstract

The impact of toxins on the developing brain is usually subtle for an individual child, but the damage can be substantial at the population level. Numerous challenges must be addressed to definitively test the impact of toxins on brain development in children: We must quantify exposure using a biologic marker or pollutant; account for an ever-expanding set of potential confounders; identify critical windows of vulnerability; and repeatedly examine the association of biologic markers of toxins with intellectual abilities, behaviors, and brain function in distinct cohorts. Despite these challenges, numerous toxins have been implicated in the development of intellectual deficits and mental disorders in children. Yet, too little has been done to protect children from these ubiquitous but insidious toxins. The objective of this review is to provide an overview on the population impact of toxins on the developing brain and describe implications for public health.
